Roy is a heavy-drinking criminal enforcer and mob hit man whose boss set him up in a double-cross scheme. After killing his would-be assassins before they could kill him, Roy discovers Rocky, a young woman being held captive, and reluctantly takes her with him on his escape. Determined to find safety and sanctuary in Galveston, Roy must find a way to stop his boss from pursuing them while trying to out-run the demons from his and Rocky's pasts.

Directed by French actress Mélanie Laurent this is violent realist film, maybe not for everyone, but I think anyone who takes it in will appreciate just how well it is done. Both the main actors, Ben Forster and Elle Fanning, give outstanding performances, as do a raft of secondary actors, all very much believable. On the surface the story’s tension is sustained throughout, but as the film progresses a moral theme of crime, redemption, and judgment emerges and is taken right to the last scene.
I think the cinematography is superb. Notably it is by UCLA graduate Dagmar Weaver-Madsen. At her young age she has already won a number of awards. Two of accolades she received along with awards for past works, I think, are particularly apt for this film:

“She has a keen eye for beautiful and evocative images, and an instinctual understanding of how the cinematographer functions as storyteller in tandem with the director and actors.”
This is a modernistic film that is unpredictable and defies being slotted into any particular trope. Hopefully there will be more to come from Laurent and Weaver-Madsen.
