In 1988 Saul Adler, a narcissistic young historian, is invited to Communist East Berlin to write a favorable essay about the German Democratic Republic. As a token of gratitude, Saul wants to give his translator's sister, a Beatles fanatic, and also his host, a photograph of him standing in the crosswalk on Abbey Road. While he waits for his photographer to arrive, he's hit by a car. This will change the trajectory of his life.
