Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson (1883) Oxford World Classics edition 1995
One of the great adventure books of the nineteenth century; it appeals to both adults and youth. I thoroughly enjoyed it and vaguely remembered the plot from I don’t know how long ago. The sly, charming, but venomous pirate Long John Silver has to be one of the great and visual fictional characters of English literature, the likes of Ebenezer Scrooge or Sherlock Holmes. There is something strangely comforting about him, duplicitous villain that he is.
Stevenson had a very interesting life, albeit short. Meaford Library's Oxford edition has background material on him, and the genesis of the tale. Great book -- Capt’n Flint, Long John’s parrot, would give it a five: “pieces-of-eight!, pieces-of-eight!, pieces-of-eight!, pieces-of-eight!, pieces-of-eight!”
